Meta on Wednesday won a motion for partial summary judgment in its favor in Kadrey v. Meta, a case brought on by 13 authors alleging the company infringed on their copyright protections by illegally using their books to train its Llama AI models.

“The Court has no choice but to grant summary judgment to Meta on the plaintiffs’ claim that the company violated copyright law by training its models with their books,” wrote US District Court judge Vince Chhabria. He concluded that the plaintiffs did not present sufficient evidence that Meta’s use of their books was harmful.

A federal judge on Wednesday sided with Facebook parent Meta Platforms in dismissing a copyright infringement lawsuit from a group of authors who accused the company of stealing their works to train its artificial intelligence technology.
