映画は、2002年に製作された同名のディズニーアニメーション映画を実写化。ハワイのカウアイ島を舞台に“オハナ（家族）”の大切な絆を描くファンタジーとなる。両親を亡くした少女リロと姉のナニの前に現れたのは、家族の愛を知らない暴れん坊のエイリアン、スティッチだった。予測不可能なスティッチの行動は平和な島に大混乱を起こすが、その奇跡の出会いはやがて、希望を失いかけた姉妹を変えていく……という内容。
